CHAPTER IX

My parents were furious—after they hugged me as tight as they could. All of my neighbors and all of our family friends stared at me while my mom screamed. “Where the hell were you? We all thought you’d been kidnapped!”

“Mom, I’m—”

But she didn’t let me get more than a word in before she started screaming again. She screamed and screamed. “You were missing for sixteen hours!” she said. “Where the hell were you for sixteen hours? We called everyone.”

Then a police officer stepped forward from between my Uncle Jeff and my neighbor, Chris. “You shouldn’t run off like that, son. You had a lot of people very worried.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I just—”

And then my mom started screaming again. “We thought you were dead!”

“We’re happy you’re okay, son,” said the cop. “Though you did have us all very worried. I need to ask you some questions so I can close out your file.”

“Answer the officer’s questions, Kyrie, or you’re grounded for the next year!” my mom shouted.

“Calm down,” my dad said to my mom. “Just be happy he’s home.”

“I just want to know where the hell he went!” she yelled.

And now, they were all staring at me, waiting for me to say where I went. The officer had a pen in one hand and a clipboard in the other. “Well, son? Where did you go?”

“I went to a friend’s house. We played video games,” I said. “I guess we just lost track of the time.”

“Don’t lie to the policeman, Kyrie!” my mom snapped.

“I’m not lying!” I lied.

“We looked at your school’s cameras, son,” said the officer as he used his fingernails to brush his moustache. “We saw you, uh, kissing a young woman in the school hallway. Then we saw the two of you heading down the school’s west wing. But we checked all of the school’s outside cameras. You never actually left the school, unless you went through some window. Now be honest with us, son. We’re not going to charge you. We just need to finish the file.”

“That’s right,” I said. “We went through a window.”

“Who was the girl?” he asked.

“Yes, Kyrie. Who was the girl?” my mom asked, now with her hands on her hips. Her lips were pressed thin as steam practically billowed out from her nostrils.

“The girl?” I said. “Just a classmate.”

“We asked your teachers and that girl doesn’t go to your school, son,” said the officer, now with narrowed, suspicious eyes.

“Right,” I said. “She goes to another school. She, uh, wasn’t supposed to be out of class. I just didn’t want to get her in trouble.” I laughed nervously. “That’s why I said she’s a classmate. Sorry. I’ll be more honest from now on.” I could feel all of the gazes in that room, piercing my sanity.

“And where did you go, son?”

I paused for a moment. “Her house.”

“Which is where? What’s this girl’s name? What school does she go to?”

I was silent for a long moment. I had no idea why all of my parents’ friends still needed to be there.
